Former NBA player Jeff Hornacek has agreed in principle to become the next head coach of the Phoenix Suns, according to ESPN.
Hornacek is expected to sign a three-year deal as early as tonight with the Suns. He has maintained a home in the Phoenix area.
The Suns are coming off a last-place finish in the Western Conference, as they ended the campaign with an overall record of 25-57. Alvin Gentry – who was in the midst of his fourth season as the Suns’ head coach – was released, and Lindsey Hunter went 12-29 after taking over in January.
Prior to entering the coaching ranks, Hornacek spent 14 seasons in the NBA as a player with the Suns, Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz. Beyond the Suns vacancy, the 50-year-old also interviewed for the Charlotte Bobcats head coaching job.
