Lakers rumors: Dwight Howard frustrated with Mike D’Antoni

From the time the Los Angeles Lakers announced Mike D’Antoni would be their new head coach, questions surrounded how he would fit with All-Star center Dwight Howard. During the big man’s exit interview following the disappointing season, Howard expressed his frustration with D’Antoni to general manager Mitch Kupchak, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles.

Howard specifically expressed his disdain toward D’Antoni because he believes he was marginalized during the season. He feels his voice was discounted, as D’Antoni instead turned to Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash for leadership and suggestions.

Even after the meeting, Kupchak said he was confident Howard would be back with the Lakers. However, since then D’Antoni has elected to not retain Howard confidant Chuck Person. Assistant Steve Clifford – who was with Howard in Orlando – could move on to take over as a head coach elsewhere.

Considering the Lakers desire to win and the fact that they can pay Howard millions more than other teams as a free agent, it’s still reasonable that he re-signs with Los Angeles. However, there have been reports that he’s also intrigued by other teams, and with continued discontent with the head coach it figures to be an interesting summer.
