The team described the procedure – called a FAST Technique – in a press release, noting that a probe will be inserted into the knee which directs ultrasonic energy to eliminate scar tissue without damaging healthy tissue.
At this point, the amount of time Gasol will require to recover from the procedure is unknown. The Lakers said this will be determined following the surgery.
This is only the beginning of the adventurous offseason Gasol is expected to have. He enters the summer as a trade candidate, though Kobe Bryant has campaigned for his return. Los Angeles could also consider amnestying him, but this would appear to be more unlikely.
Before a decision is made on Pau, the Lakers will likely wait to see what happens with center Dwight Howard.
In total, Gasol missed 33 games this season due to injury. When he was healthy enough to suit up, the forward averaged 13.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 33.8 minutes per game.
