Lakers' Dwight Howard doesn't require shoulder surgery

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard met with a shoulder specialist yesterday to have his torn labrum examined. Following the visit, the Lakers have announced that Howard will not require surgery to repair the labrum tear in his right shoulder.

Howard was examined by Dr. James Tibone of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopedic Group. Prior to the announcement, the big man told reporters that he's prepared to do whatever he can this offseason to get himself "right."

"I'm going to do whatever I can to get myself right this offseason," said Howard, who spent last summer away from basketball while he rehabbed from back surgery, at his exit interview Tuesday. "Last year, I didn't have the opportunity to get in the gym once before the season. I didn't have the opportunity to grow and develop as a player, but that's something I'm looking forward to."

Howard initially injured his shoulder back in January during a contest against the Los Angeles Clippers. He was sidelined for six games as a result, and it's hampered him throughout the remainder of the year. Howard has also dealt with back issues during his time in the NBA.

There have been conflicting reports on whether Howard -- an unrestricted free agent -- will test the open market or return to the Lakers. He could do both, but it's clear that Los Angeles wants him back.
