Knicks’ Amar’e Stoudemire to play when Carmelo Anthony does not

The New York Knicks are expected to welcome forward Amar’e Stoudemire back to the lineup for today’s Game 3 matchup against the Indiana Pacers. While Stoudemire is a talented player, he’s not viewed as an especially good fit with All-Star small forward Carmelo Anthony. For this reason, John Schuhmann of NBA.com believes most of Stoudemire’s minutes could come when Anthony is on the bench.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson said he expects Stoudemire to see 10 to 15 minutes of playing time today. Anthony will likely play 40 minutes or so, and for this reason there will likely be at least some level of overlap between the duo’s playing time.

Still, considering the importance of today’s Game 3, Schuhmann wouldn’t be surprised to see Anthony come off when Stoudemire’s coming on and vice versa. The issue with having both on the court is that neither is particularly adept at playing defense, and their offensive games don’t click.

While it sounds crazy, the Knicks have thrived in Stoudemire’s absence. That’s a tough pill to swallow when you’re talking about a player making $20 million per year, and Woodson will have to do his best to keep the team rolling.
