Celtics rumors: Kevin Garnett mulling retirement?

Last season, Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he was positive Kevin Garnett was coming back for another year. Now, with rumors circulating that the big man could be mulling retirement, the coach isn’t sure, according to Jackie MacMullan of ESPN Boston.

"I have no clue," Doc admitted. "I was positive last year [he was coming back]. I'm not as sure this year."

Team sources told MacMullan that Garnett is expected to undergo ankle surgery to shave down the bone spurs he has developed. This isn’t a major procedure, and it isn’t something that would by itself result in retirement talk.

What does appear to have Garnett mulling retirement is the future of teammate Paul Pierce. The big man has told reporters that his future could be tied to how Boston handles Pierce. Some believe the career Celtic could be cut prior to next season, something that wouldn’t figure to sit well with Garnett.

The Celtics are expected to get Rajon Rondo back healthy next season, so they could attempt to piece together one more run. However, it’s evident that the Garnett/Pierce era is approaching its end.
