Thunder’s Russell Westbrook officially out for playoffs

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook underwent successful surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee yesterday, the team has announced. While Westbrook is expected to make a full recovery, the team is now officially listing him as out for the remainder of the playoffs.

After the injury was diagnosed, there was still a chance that Westbrook could return to the court later into the postseason depending on the level of damage revealed to his knee during the surgery. Whatever the findings were, they led the Thunder to announce Westbrook will be out through the entire playoffs. They haven’t provided a timeframe for return beyond that.

While this certainly hurts the Thunder’s chances of advancing deep into the playoffs and representing the Western Conference in the NBA Finals, Westbrook is young – he’s still only 24 years old – and OKC doesn’t want to rush him back.

With Westbrook sidelined, the Thunder are expected to start Reggie Jackson and will probably use more of veteran guard Derek Fisher. All-Star Kevin Durant will also have to up his game in an attempt to compensate for the loss of Westbrook.
