Spurs sit Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Kawhi Leonard

Entering Monday night’s contest against the Golden State Warriors, the San Antonio Spurs had a slight shot at claiming the top spot in the Western Conference. Rather than push for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, coach Gregg Popovich elected to rest star players Tim Duncan and Tony Parker as well as key contributor Kawhi Leonard last night.

If the Spurs wanted to claim the first playoff spot in the West, they would have had to win their final two games, while the Oklahoma City Thunder would have had to lose their two remaining contests. Popovich considered it more important to get his players rest and ready for the playoffs as a No. 2 seed than to have them continue to grind it out in an effort to claim the top spot, something that didn’t have a high likelihood of happening all things considered.

The Spurs were 5-5 over their last 10 entering Monday’s game, and Parker especially had appeared to be dragging in recent contests. They dropped last night’s game against the Warriors, and they have one more regular season tune up on Wednesday prior to the start of the playoffs.
