NBA rumors: Phil Jackson ‘itching’ for return

Former head coach Phil Jackson has been retired for roughly the past two seasons, but he’s “become increasingly interested” in returning to work in the NBA next year, according to Ramona Shelburne and Marc Stein of ESPN Los Angeles.

While Jackson is reportedly “itching” to return to the NBA, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s only interest in coming back as a head coach. Jackson is also intrigued by the concept of moving into a management position for the first time.

At this point, there’s no clear opportunity in play yet for Jackson. Since retiring from the game, he was tied to the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach vacancy, while he turned down the Brooklyn Nets. It’s been reported that Jackson has said he has no intentions of coaching again.

Still, teams – including the Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers – are expected to pursue Jackson. But Jackson may be more interested in taking on a similar role to the one former head coach Pat Riley holds with the Miami Heat.
