Rudy Gay wants to keep playing this season

Despite ongoing back problems, Rudy Gay wants to keep playing.  He does not want the Toronto Raptors to shut him down this season.  Gay's back issues had led the team to talk about shutting him down to allow him to get healthy for next year.

The Raptors aren't going anywhere, so they don't want to risk long-term injury.  However, as Mike Ganter of the Toronto Sun says, Gay wants to keep working out, get his back healthy, and continue playing.

“The only way I’m going to get shut down is if the doctors tell me I need to stop playing,” Gay said. “I’ve been forced out before and that’s not something I look forward to again.”

Gay was recently traded by the Memphis Grizzlies to the Raptors.  He instantly became the Raptors leading scorer.  Gay's talents are obvious and he can certainly help the Raptors going forward.  But the team needs to take this decision out of his hands.  If he can risk further injury to his back by paying, they need to not allow him to return.

Gay has averaged 18.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season.  In his career, Gay has averaged 18.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
