The Los Angeles Lakers thought they might get away with losing Metta World Peace for just a week. Of course, that wouldn't be the case. After getting an MRI to determine the extent of the damage, and after meeting with team doctor Steve Lombardo, it was determined that Metta World Peace will need arthroscopic knee surgery.
According to ESPN Los Angeles, MWP is expected to miss six weeks. That means if the Lakers fall out of the playoffs, his season is over. If they make the playoffs, he should be able to rejoin the team at some point during the postseason.
The Lakers are far from guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. They are one game above .500, and they hold a one game lead over the Utah Jazz and the Dallas Mavericks for the last spot in the Western Conference. It wouldn't take much to knock them off. In fact, if the Lakers continue on their losing streak, they could find themselves out of that eighth spot by the end of the week. Los Angeles has lost three straight games.
Metta World Peace is not a dominating player, but he's a contributor. It will be a tough loss for the Lakers. Jodie Meeks will get a shot at starting during MWP's absence. MWP has averaged 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season.
