The tear in Pau Gasol's plantar fascia is severe enough to put his return timetable on the long end. Gasol will miss 6-8 weeks before he can return to the Los Angeles Lakers' lineup. This is bad news for a Lakers team that is fighting just to get into the playoffs.
Gasol suffered the injury on Tuesday, and the team released their official estimate for his recovery last night. The Lakers expect Gasol to recover within 6-8 weeks and then rejoin the team during the stretch. By that point, the Lakers may have fallen hopelessly out of contention. Yet, they likely should have done that already and they haven't.
The team would love to have Gasol on the court, but they will fight on without them. The Lakers, as bad as they've been, have managed to keep fighting all year long. Yet, without Gasol in the lineup, the team is under .500. They are over .500 when he plays.
Gasol is averaging 13.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this season. His productivity has declined drastically this season. Much of the reasoning is injuries. In his career, Gasol has averaged 18.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
