With the work GM Danny Ferry has done, the Atlanta Hawks should be in a good position this offseason. The team can re-sign players while pursuing free agents that will improve the overall roster for the club. Josh Smith will likely be re-signed, and the Hawks may then still have the ability to go after a big name free agent like Dwight Howard.
According to Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today Sports, Ferry has made all the right moves in allowing the Hawks some flexibility this offseason. The team's top priority will be to re-sign Smith, but they can certainly pursue Howard as well.
Smith has suffered some minor injuries this season with the Hawks, but he has been able to play through them. So far this season, Smith is averaging 16.5 points per game to go along with 8.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
Howard is finding his groove in Los Angeles after taking quite some time to adjust to playing with the Lakers. He is also coming off offseason back surgery. However, the star center will be a big-time target on the free agent market this upcoming offseason. The Lakers have not ruled out the possibility that they re-sign him long-term.
