The Los Angeles Clippers had to do battle without their star point guard. Chris Paul sat out last night's game against the Memphis Grizzlies with a bruised right knee cap. The injury was suffered toward the end of Saturday's game. He had been listed as day-to-day leading up to last night's contest, but he was not able to go.
According to Arash Markazi of ESPN Los Angeles, the move is more precautionary than anything else. The Clippers' head coach Vinny Del Negro said the team wants to make the smart decision when it comes to Paul's health. And for Paul's part, he understood prior to the game that he could still be a good teammate from the bench.
"I'll be right there on the bench just like [Chauncey Billups], just like when I missed a couple of games last year," Paul said. "There for vocal [support] and tell guys what I see. I think it will be huge for me and Chauncey to be there for [Bledsoe]."Paul leads the NBA in assists this season with 386. So far this year, he is averaging 16.8 points and 9.7 assists per game. His production has allowed the Clippers to supplant the Los Angeles Lakers as the best team in L.A.
The Clippers are 28-9 and in first place in the Pacific Division. They are just one game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for first place overall in the Western Conference. The team will need Paul's continued production so that they can fight for the number one seed come playoff time.
