Just as it seemed the championship duo of Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant would be reunited, the Los Angeles Lakers went in another direction. The team hired their second choice, Mike D'Antoni. Despite the discussions with Jackson regarding a return, the Lakers said they were all on board with D'Antoni's hiring.
According to the Los Angeles Lakers' press release, Jerry Buss, Jim Buss, and GM Mitch Kupchak were all unanimous in their desire the hire D'Antoni. This of course, after something fell through with Jackson. The truth is, the front office may not have even been unanimous had Jackson returned. Jim Buss and Jackson did not get along.
Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times gave us some insight as to why Jackson was not hired.
Mike D'Antoni signed a four-year deal with the Lakers. Phil Jackson was "asking for the moon," accoring to source familiar w/ the situation. The Lakers, who started the season 1-4, fired Mike Brown a couple days ago. Since the firing, they have won their next two games. Perhaps with a new coach in place, the team will be able to turn things around.
