The Los Angeles Lakers will look to avoid starting the season 0-3 tonight when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers. It will be a home game for both teams, but the Lakers will have the court as the home team. However, it looks like they will be without Steve Nash.
Nash injured his leg - officially diagnosed as a leg contusion - in Wednesday's game against the Trail Blazers. He had to leave the game in the second quarter and did not return. Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times says Nash is doubtful for tonight's game, leaving the Lakers to go with Steve Blake in his spot. Nash missed practice on Thursday, but he is still hopeful about playing tonight.
"I hope so. We'll see if it calms down some more," said Nash about playing in the game, after he missed practice Thursday. "I'm a little too optimistic to say doubtful. It's definitely touch and go."Nash has not had much impact in the Lakers first two games. In their opener against the Dallas Mavericks, he played 34 minutes but only had seven points and four assists. In the second game, he played just 16 minuted before leaving with the injury. The Lakers are hoping he can get healthy and get back to the productive player they know they acquired.
Nash has a career average of 14.4 points per game and 8.6 assists per game. His point totals have steadily been declining since the 2009-10 season. However, he has maintained a double-digit average in assists per game in seven of the last eight seasons.
