Stephen Curry has a history of ankle injuries. He missed 40 games last season and underwent arthroscopic surgery on the ankle this past April. So when he went down in the Golden State Warriors' exhibition game yesterday, the team had to be concerned. Curry rolled his ankle in the second quarter against the Portland Trailblazers and did not return to the game.
According to Marcus Thompson II of the San Jose Mercury News, Curry tried to check back into the game, but Warriors' coach Mark Jackson would not allow it. The team held him out of the rest of the game for precautionary reasons. Some players said the injury wasn't as bad as it looked, but any injury to Curry's right ankle is concerning.
Curry was trying to stop Wesley Matthews from blowing past him and made a move that included sticking his foot out. Matthews hit the foot and caused Curry to roll his ankle. This was the first issue related to the right ankle since Curry underwent the surgery back in April. He had no setbacks with his recovery and has been healthy this preseason.
Curry is in his third NBA season, all with the Warriors. He was drafted seventh overall in the 2009 draft after shining in his college career with Davidson. Curry has one year remaining on his current contract, and he is in negotiations with the team for an extension. He has averaged 18.6 points per game and 6.1 assists per game in his career.
The Warriors finished 23-43 last year. They have struggled for some time now. Curry, though, has been a bright spot for that franchise. He has performed up to expectations, and probably exceeded some expectations, for the Warriors. Aside from his injury-plagued season last year, Curry has not missed much time, and has been a big part of any success the Warriors have had.
